Competitor Spotlight for February 2019
Come Join Landon at the Arkansas Showdown in Russellville, AR on March 30th, 2019
https://www.askcshowdown.com/

Name: Landon Dean Boyer

Age: 10

Hobbies: Taekwondo, baseball, football, golf, hunting and fishing

Martial Arts School: Straight Up Martial Arts

Instructor: Charles Garrett

System of Martial Arts: Taekwondo

League Affiliations: ASKC, PROMAC, NASKA

Brief Bio: Landon started Taekwondo at the age of 8 and immediately fell in love with it. He spent the first year kicking or punching at almost every piece of furniture in the house. For Christmas that year, he asked for a punching bag to practice on, and now not a day goes by that he doesn’t hit his bag. Landon is an extremely hard worker and always strives to be the best at everything he does. His favorite saying is that “hard work pays off”, which is inscribed on his belt. When asked, Landon said what drives him is “The competitions - showing up to a tournament, never knowing who will be there to compete against and knowing I’ll have to bring my best every time. It shows me all the hours in training are worth it and makes me want to work harder and do even better.” His goals for 2019 are to be competitive in his division in forms and to win each tournament in sparring, which is his favorite event.

DSK Martial Arts
Competitor Spotlight for February 2019

Come Join Taylin at the Memphis Open in Southhaven, MS on February 15th and 16th, 2019
https://www.thememphisopen.com/

Name: Taylin Elizabeth Oberly

Age: 12

Hobbies: Karate, training and conditioning, Drawing/art, playing basketball with friends, anything outside and active really

Martial Arts School: Next Level Sport Karate Martial Arts

Instructors: Richie Osborn Jr, Dustin Stapp Base

System of Martial Arts: Tae Kwon Do and Karate

Team Affiliation: Team Heartland

League Affiliations: PROMAC, NASKA, ASKC

Brief Bio: Taylin started her Karate journey at the age of 6 after her parents realized she loved watching UFC fights on TV as much as they did. At her first tournament, Sparring was the event she feared the most. However, summoning the courage to compete in sparring she was astonished. Not only had she overcome her fear, but she found that it was fun! Ever since then, she has been hooked on sparring competition and has never looked back. If you have the privilege to see her compete you cannot help but agree that this is indeed her element! Taylin tells us, “I love the idea of getting on the mat, competing and then hugging my opponent who is also my friend and karate family when the match is over. You don’t do that in other sports.” She trains even on days she is not in class or at the dojo. “On days I don’t have class I will get a group of friends together or just me and my dad and we will go running and do circuit training and conditioning just because, and every Sunday I go to Kansas City and train with David Muhammad and this incredible group of Karate athletes from all over. Athletes from several different schools and different states all come together and just spar and help each other get better and grow. We call it the Breakfast Club.” When asked what is her favorite thing about sport martial arts, Taylin states enthusiastically, “My favorite part about Karate is definitely the fact that you make so many friends and the friends become like family. I have so many friends from all over, I get to travel and no matter where I go there’s always friends and family there and new friends to be made!” Taylin adds, “My Goal this year is to finish just as good or better in my new division as I did in 2018 in all the circuits I compete in.”
